Clinical Paediatrics and Child Health

Clinical research in disease epidemiology, vaccine-preventable disease and the impact of environment as well as other psychosocial factors on children's well-being are of high relevance to paediatric practice and health-care policy making. The Department has been devoted to population studies in understanding the local burden of childhood illnesses, with examples which include those focusing on lead overloading and infant diarrhea in the 80s, to asthma and thalassemia in the 90s, to pollution, influenza and metabolic syndrome in the millenium.

Poverty and Child Health:

to understand the contribution of socio-economic factors to the physical and mental well-being of children and adolescents in Hong Kong

Child Abuse and Injury:

to evaluate the burden and pattern of non-accidental and accidental injury in Hong Kong, possible risk factors and efficacy of preventive measures

Air Pollution and Asthma:

to investigate the epidemiology of childhood asthma, pattern of admission, and association with air pollution
