Research Laboratories
The paediatric laboratory embarked on its journey as a "one-man-band" in 1962 at Queen Mary Hospital. In the early years, the paediatric laboratory took the initiative to develop and adapt clinical laboratory tests specifically tailored for micro-volume samples. Over time, the laboratory has evolved from a service laboratory to a research laboratory, which is equipped with the state-of-the-art core research equipment and managed by a core group of research and technical staff. At present, our research laboratories are housed in two sites: i) Laboratory Block of HKUMed at Sassoon Road, and ii) Hong Kong Children’s Hospital. At these sites, principal investigators of the Department have pioneered research initiatives to achieve excellence in paediatric scientific research.
Laboratory services
Sample Banking
Paediatric Research Lab offers the services for sample logistics, processing, storage and record for basic and clinical research studies. It also supports the clinical trials for sending out samples to the central lab, and proper management of freezers and related equipment.
Tissue Culture Facility
Sophisticated tissue culture facilities equipped with biosafety cabinets, CO2 incubators, fluorescent inverted microscopes, automated cell counters etc., and cryostorage tanks are available at both Paediatric Research Laboratory at Laboratory Block and HKCH. Our experience technical staff also provides support on the cultures of skin derived fibroblasts, and iPSC cells.
Molecular Biology
Droplet digital PCR, Q-PCR, Multimode plate reader are available in HKCH research core facility. Our facility in conjunction with the Faculty Core multi-omic facilities to support a broad spectrum of paediatric research, spanning from basic science to clinical and translational studies.
Bio-imaging
The HKCH research core facility provides state-of-the-art bioimaging technology platforms including Confocal microscopy and NSIM, Mass Cytometry, Multicolor Flow Cytometry, High-speed Cell Sorting and Spatial Proteomics on tissue sections to enhance the quality of paediatric research and serve as a bridge for translating the scientific breakthroughs into potential novel treatment and diagnostic technologies.
Animal Room
The satellite animal room equipped with an individually ventilated caging system and a biosafety cabinet for animal experiments and cage changing, to satisfy the scientific requirements and animal welfare. The dedicated liaison officer is responsible for liaison with the internal animal ethnics committees and international accreditation program.
Health and Safety
The dedicated technical staff serve as departmental safety representatives to incorporate safety measures to provide a health and safety environment in the laboratory, to ensure an effective safety management especially in chemical and biological safety, and to regularly review and update the departmental health and safety policy.
